Eating Well While Traveling – A Gastronome’s Guide

Travel is, in many ways, the food of life. There is incomparable nourishment to be found in embracing new locales, cultures, and experiences wherever in the world you decide to jet yourself off to. However, travel as a food of life doesn’t replace a much more fundamental food of life – which is, well, food.

Indeed, traveling is a fantastic way to build an appetite. And how better to eat than locally, again soaking in the incredible gastronomic possibilities of your chosen vacation destination? As a self-professed foodie, you might even be more excited about the food than the travel. Let the following serve as a brief guide to incorporating culinary experiences in your international travels.

Research Local Cuisine Before Departure

This may sound a little like I’m teaching you to suck eggs, but rest assured: these eggs are delicious. There’s some small joy in finding secret, impromptu street-food spots to grab some delicious luncheon while traveling, but you won’t be able to make the most of your destination without having some prior understanding of the local food culture. That is to say: research, research, research! There are so many useful resources out there for you to plum, from food blogs to travel forums and even social media posts.

Seek Recommendations from Locals

As we just touched upon, there’s two sides to the gastro-travel coin – preparation and spontaneity. There is untold value in local knowledge when it comes to discovering hidden culinary gems, meaning you could be best-served leaving some holes in your itinerary for authentic restaurant suggestions from residents, hotel staff, or local guides.

Consider Unique Dining Experiences

Equally, in your planning phase you might be able to create some unique dining opportunities of your own. If you’ve the budget, then even your off days can be filled with gastronomic glory; consider the potential of a private-dining evening on your yacht charter, or the elevated bliss of a chef’s-table 1-1 tasting experience! These allow you to make the most of your area, while retaining a sense of luxury about your getaway.

Utilize Technology to Find Top-Rated Dining Spots

Finally, and unavoidably, your cellphone is your best chance to make the most of new locations on the fly. If you’re roadtripping, what better a resource for last-minute food-finding than Google Maps? Find somewhere fun, then go to TripAdvisor to get a sense of the ratings!

With all of the above in mind, your next vacation is all-but guaranteed to be a foodie fantasy of all its own. Bon appetit!
