A Guide To Protecting Your Jewellery Whilst Travelling
If you’re going to be taking small, valuable and fragile items away on a long trip, then it makes sense to take a few simple precautions. This is especially the case when it comes to jewellery, much of which might have sentimental, as well as monetary, value.
Let’s take a look at a few simple ways to safeguard your jewellery when you’re moving it from place to place.
Preventing Damage and Tangling
Ideally, you’d take all of the jewellery you own in a case that’s been designed especially for the purpose. However, sometimes a simple DIY solution can be just as effective. For example, you might use a drinking straw to keep the chain of a pendant protected and untangled.
Safeguarding Your Valuables
Along the way, there are a number of precautions you might take to keep your valuables away from the hands of strangers. You might, for example, store them in your carry-on luggage, and thereby slash the risk that they’ll be lost in transit. Items such as Rolex’s should be placed in carry-ons – or, better yet, worn throughout the flight.
If you’re staying at a hotel with a safe, you might make sure that you secure your valuables away when you’re not wearing them. If you do choose to wear them, it’s worth being discreet, especially if you’re going to be heading out in a part of the world that’s prone to crime. In other words, don’t go out clubbing in a major city if you’re wearing a lot of your favourite jewellery.
Preparing For The Unexpected
Of course, however seriously you guard against the possibility of theft, or damage, there will remain a non-zero possibility that your items will be affected. For this reason, it’s a good idea to get your beloved items insured, and to make sure that they’ve been independently valued, so that you can get what’s really needed, should you need to make a claim. This might also mean taking photos so that you can prove to your insurer that the items in question really do exist.
Maintenance On The Move
Finally, if you’re going to be on the road for an extended period of time, it might be a good idea to learn how to care for your jewellery. This might mean scrubbing it after you’ve been swimming. A better idea might be to avoid swimming altogether when wearing these pieces. Make sure, however, that you store your best items somewhere safe before you take a dip. Saltwater and chlorine can both damage the metal of an engagement ring, and sudden impacts can work loose the stone. If you don’t notice that the gem is missing, then you might struggle to track it down later.
