White Chocolate Mocha Recipe (Starbucks Copycat)

It’s freezing out there and I don’t know about you but I still haven’t put my hot chocolate station away. I’m usually a cup of coffee or milk chocolate hot chocolate gal, but today I craved something different.. something a bit like those white chocolate mochas they serve at Starbucks.

Cue my homemade version with homemade white chocolate sauce stirred into espresso, topped with steamed milk and whipped cream. As it’s Valentine’s soon, I added some little hearts for some sweet decor! I think this has to be my favorite coffee drink that isn’t black coffee!

January is a funny month of cold weather and fresh starts, but hopes of summer linger in the back of my mind – anyone else? For now – here’s one to warm you up! I’ll be back with the full iced version later on in the year (see a short version in the FAQs).

Scroll down to the recipe card for exact quantities.

White chocolate chips – you could use chocolate buttons or white chocolate bars as an alternative.

Coconut oil – this helps turn the choc chips into a white chocolate syrup/sauce.

Shot of espresso – I used a nespresso coffee pod from Starbucks but you could use any coffee of your choosing. Coffee from the Italian Moka would also do, or any espresso from freshly ground beans.

Whole milk – semi-skimmed, skim milk or any non-dairy milk: oat milk, almond milk, coconut milk, cashew milk.. as long as it steams, it’ll work.

Whipped cream – or freshly whipped double cream/heavy cream.

Decorations optional – I went for little white chocolate stars and mini hearts available from waitrose.

How to make this white chocolate mocha recipe (step by step)

Step 1Melt the white chocolate chips and coconut oil in a small saucepan on a low heat (or in a microwave in short ten second bursts). Stir as it melts until a creamy sauce consistency has been achieved.

Step 2Make your espresso as you normally do and pour into the mug you’ll be using. I used a starbucks Nespresso pod in my Nespresso machine. Meanwhile, froth or steam your milk as you usually would. I used my Lavazza A Modo Mio frother.

Step 3Pour in the chocolate sauce and stir until all the lumps are gone.

Step 4 – Once steamed or frothed, pour the milk  foam over your coffee.

Step 5Top with whipped cream and decorations if you wish! Enjoy!

So there we go, you can make your own copycat Starbucks white chocolate mocha in the comfort of your own home. The Starbucks drink at half the price as most of these ingredients you’ll probably already have in your cupboard. And so much like the original recipe!

One thing to bare in mind is good quality chocolate chips and coffee is what’s going to make this delicious coffee drink, even better.

This white chocolate mocha can of course be made vegan. You can use any alternative milk: oat, coconut, soy. The taste will vary depending on which milk you choose, but just choose your fave and go from there. I’m sure you know what you like!

Can I make this coffee with an espresso machine?

Yes! You could use an Italian Moka pot to get the closest to a shot of espresso. A Moka pot uses ground coffee and water to brew. A cafetiere may also work but the coffee will be a more watery than this recipe requires.

Can I make an iced white chocolate mocha?

An iced white chocolate mocha would be perfect for the summer months. Follow the steps as above and once you’ve stirred the chocolate sauce into the coffee, add a few cubes of ice. Don’t froth your milk, just pour it in cold. Top with whipped cream and decorate as normal!
